We invest heavily in equipment and technician training which means the air conditioning services we offer are far superior to other independent garages.
We employ a variety of techniques to locate even the smallest air conditioning leaks quickly. Tracer gas testing is usually required to find smaller leaks, while larger leaks can usually be identified using a simple pressure test. Please contact Precision Motorcare for no-obligation advice on which option is best for your car’s air conditioning system – more information about each method is below:
To locate even the very smallest leak in a vehicle’s air conditioning system Precision Motorcare use a “tracer gas” which contains a small amount of highly detectable hydro-carbon, using a device which can easily pick up this “tracer gas”. Using this method even the tiniest leaks can be identified.
This process is usually completed in under an hour unless your particular car or van has difficult-to-access air conditioning components.
Firstly, and most importantly, this method of finding leaks in your car or van’s air conditioning system must NEVER be carried out using compressed air. If it is, moisture will be introduced into the air conditioning system which can be extremely dangerous, and possibly incendiary.
For larger air conditioning system leads, normally, pressure testing (with nitrogen) is all that is required. Precision Motorcare will pressurise the air conditioning system using an inert gas (OFN -oxygen-free nitrogen) and then listen for the sound of escaping air, or use a bubble spray, to locate the leak. This method is fast and inexpensive but can only be used to find larger leaks.
Ultra-violet (UV) dye testing is an alternative method for finding small air conditioning leaks. During this method, UV dye is injected into the air conditioning system along with the refrigerant. The refrigerant transports the dye around the system which is visible using a UV light wherever there is a leak.
But we must always bear in mind this method can only be used in an air conditioning system which hasn’t already leaked refrigerant; it is against the law to put refrigerant into an air conditioning system where there is a known leak.
When Precision Motorcare regas a vehicle’s air conditioning system we will always put UV dye in with the refrigerant as standard so that leaks can be found easily at any time in the future.
Choose Precision Motorcare for your car or van air conditioning regas and receive a UV dye test FREE, saving you £35
If your air conditioning system needs a regas more frequently than recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer (usually every 24-36 months), then it is likely there is a leak somewhere.
Vacuuming an air conditioning system is done to remove moisture, not to find leaks. Moisture in an air conditioning system is dangerous and should be removed if suspected to be present.
Broadly speaking, tracer gas testing is best. This will find both large and small leaks. If you’re unsure please don’t hesitate to contact us at Precision Motorcare and we’ll gladly talk you through the options and prices, with no obligation.
